Behind the Scenes

Dressing The Wives

Sarah Arthur
(Costume Designer)

For a Costume Designer, Footballers' Wives is the ultimate dream - to create stunning outfits and designer looks for the characters on a limited budget is quite a challenge. But to make them look a million dollars is very gratifying.

Footballers' Wives Series Four has been no exception. Most of the characters were already established and therefore had a set image, but we also had two great new characters to work with. Bruno and Lucy Milligan (Ben Richards and Helen Latham) - both of which have quite different looks to the other characters and very much needed their own identity.

Lucy is very alternative in her way of dressing. She is very put together in her own unique way - unlike the "normal" Footballers' Wife! She's not so much into her 'labels' but into design. Bruno is a very 'bespoke' character, not 'street trendy' like some of the other characters.

I have continued to dress our existing characters so they are the epitome of wealth and glamour, almost 'show biz'! And we do hope that when the audience watch the show there is an element of fun and surprise to keep them entertained.

Each episode has had a big set piece. We have had a garden party wedding, themed "Summer Glamour", for Jackie and Roger Webb (Gillian Taylforth and Jesse Birdsall) . Jackie's dress was by Gharani Strok. The dress Tanya Turner (Zoe Lucker) wore was a Castor and Pura, blue/red fishtailed.

In the third episode, there is the christening of Tanya's baby. The theme was "Grecian" - Tanya wore a beautiful Ghost dress and Amber Gates (Laila Rouass) wore a green and white linen suit by Zara. Jackie wore a stunning green/silk Roberto Cavalli dress while the boys were mainly in cream/white linen. Conrad's (Ben Price) shirt was a fabulous Paul Smith embroidered number. Bruno's suit was by the very talented and innovative tailor Gresham Blake and Lucy's stunning dress was by Voyage.

When Tanya and Conrad get engaged, she wears a pink outfit by Escada, which was complimented by her new pink diamond masterpiece on her hand, which was by Tom McEwan.

The support from designers, agents, boutiques and high street stores has been amazing. I worked closely with Garlands who supply Versace, Roberto Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana amongst a few. Also M&M Management gave huge support with the likes of; Gary Anderson, Janet Reger, Shanghai Tang and Eavis & Brown.

A big thanks to Parker Hobalt for all their sunglasses which include Ray Ban, Vogue and Versace. De Keyser for Wheels and Dolls Baby and Allen B - as worn by Shannon Lawson (Sarah Barrand) throughout the series. Another thank you to Kiss PR for clothes by Porn Star. Wonderful underwear was supplied by Splendour and Wonderbra.

One of my greatest successes this year has been with the help of New Look and Warehouse. These clothes are High Street but dressed with accessories, look a million dollars.
